Antigone’s Funeral

Performance Lecture, 2024

This Lecture performance took its point of departure in Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet's filmatisation of Sophocles Antigone, "Die Antigone des Sophokles nach der Hölderlinschen Übertragung für die Bühne bearbeitet von Brecht 1948 (Suhrkamp Verlag)" (1991). It could also be described as a drag conversation on the ethics of undeadness with a (or the) European nettle tree (Celtis australis).

The piece contained different layers of fiction and mediation: dressed in a self made chiton (a traditional dress used during Greek antiquity) I was myself acting as Antigone (a "gesture" which was repeated live during the performance) in a prerecorded video The video was shot under one of three located European Nettle trees in Berlin. Acting and film screening was further on combined with a more traditional lecture on Straub-Huillet's Antigone, death and infinity.
